Currently Playing : Wake Me Up When September Ends

By Greenday.

"Wake Me Up When September Ends", the fourth single by Green Day from their seventh studio album, American Idiot, takes the form of a melancholic ballad, on the theme of the passing summer and memories of a deceased father. The song is an ode to Billie Joe Armstrong's father, who died from cancer when Armstrong was 10 years old. This is the first time Armstrong has talked about his father in song.

September 11th connection

Some speculate the song is an elegy to 9/11. Indeed, the booklet, which takes the form of a diary, puts the song's lyrics at the date Sept. 10, but immediately beneath it features the number 11 (the song's track number).

The music video for "Wake Me Up When September Ends" is very unique. The video is seven minutes long and the song doesn't even begin until about 1:43. The music video could be considered a short movie as it even begins with the title of the song showing a teenage couple (played by Jamie Bell and Evan Rachel Wood) cuddling in a field. The video strays from the original meaning of the song and instead focuses on the teenage couple as the boyfriend promises never to leave his girlfriend. Though at three minutes, the girlfriend confronts him over something he did. The video shows that her boyfriend has signed up for the Marines. It shows the boyfriend in Iraq being ambushed by insurgents. Meanwhile, the girlfriend is shown waiting for her boyfriend to come home.
